Episode 40: Katie Jarvis - Behind the scenes of Rise of the Footsoldier, Eastender’s Hayley Slater & What really happened in Southend?

London, August 5, 2024 - KT Jarvis, a household name in the East End of Essex and beyond, recently sat down for an exclusive interview on the popular "Criminal Connection" podcast, hosted by Terry Stone, aka the "Podfather." Jarvis, best known for her iconic roles in "Fish Tank" and "EastEnders," opened up about her journey from a tumultuous youth to BAFTA-winning actress, as well as her experiences on and off the screen.

A Star is Born

KT Jarvis, affectionately known as Donna from the "Foot Soldier" series, reminisced about her early days in the industry. Her breakout role came from an unexpected encounter on the streets of Essex. At just 15, she was discovered by casting agent Lucy Pardee while having a heated argument, a moment that would change her life forever. Pardee saw in Jarvis the fiery spirit needed for Andrea Arnold's critically acclaimed film "Fish Tank."

"Andrea saved my life," Jarvis recalled, "I was just at mates' places, not really getting in trouble, but not doing much either. 'Fish Tank' pulled me out of that environment and gave me purpose."

Her performance in "Fish Tank" was nothing short of spectacular. The film, which also starred Michael Fassbender, brought Jarvis international acclaim and a BAFTA award for Best Newcomer.

From Fish Tank to EastEnders

After "Fish Tank," Jarvis found herself inundated with offers. However, her path wasn't straightforward. She took a break from acting to focus on her family, a decision that only fueled her drive when she returned to the screen.

EastEnders fans remember Jarvis as Hayley Slater, a role that threw her into the public eye like never before. "EastEnders just threw me in everyone's front room every single day of the week," she laughed. Despite the intense scrutiny and the pressures of fame, Jarvis spoke fondly of her time on the show, particularly the camaraderie among the cast.

Behind the Scenes and Personal Struggles

Not everything was rosy in Jarvis's life. In a candid moment, she opened up about a particularly dark chapter involving a public altercation in Southend. The incident, which involved a confrontation with several women, led to a protracted legal battle that took four years to resolve. Jarvis was eventually cleared of all but one charge, which she accepted responsibility for, admitting to public disorder.

"I had never been in trouble with the police in my whole entire adult life," she said. "It was a nightmare, but I'm glad it's behind me."

Rise of the Footsoldier and Future Projects

One of Jarvis's recent highlights was her role in "Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins," where she played Donna. The film, part of the popular "Footsoldier" series, allowed her to showcase her acting chops in a gritty, true-crime setting.

"Working on 'Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins' was amazing," Jarvis enthused. "The cast and crew were fantastic, and it felt like one big family."

Despite the challenges she faced, Jarvis's talent and determination have kept her in the spotlight. Recently, she has been approached for several new projects, including a potential TV series based on a popular book. Though she has taken a step back to focus on her family and a new job, Jarvis remains open to future acting opportunities.

A Bright Future Ahead

At 32, KT Jarvis has already achieved more than many actors dream of in a lifetime. From being discovered on the streets of Essex to winning a BAFTA and starring in major TV dramas, her journey is a testament to her talent and resilience. While she currently enjoys a quieter life, working at a garage and spending time with her children, the allure of the screen still beckons.

For now, Jarvis is content with her achievements and looks forward to whatever the future holds. "I've learned to appreciate everything and take things as they come," she said. "I'm happy and content as I am, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?"
